Los Angeles County Prosecutor to Dismiss Nearly 60,000 Marijuana-Related Convictions

Near 60, 000 marijuana-related convictions will be dismissed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney , George Gascón.

In addition to legalizing cannabis in California, Proposal 64 from 2016 clarified some old marijuana-related convictions .

With the support of several non-profit leaders, Gascón announced that close to 58, cases that will be denied are in process, and not only erasing the criminal record but also sealing it permanently .

“Dismissing these convictions means the possibility of a better future or for thousands of people deprived of their rights who are receiving this much-needed relief ”, expressed Gascón in a statement .

It will be the second consecutive year that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has made a determination in this regard . In February of 2020, then-prosecutor Jackie Lacey announced that they would almost 66, 000 marijuana convictions, some dating from 1961.

That determination followed the passage of legislation that directs California prosecutors to review and reduce felony convictions for growing, selling, transporting and possessing of marijuana for sale to misdemeanors .

Gascón was co-author of the Proposal 64 , as in 2016 legalized marijuana in California.

According to the prosecutor’s office, last year’s dismissals only covered cases state Department of Justice data, and on closer examination Two of the Los Angeles County court records were found near 58, 000 felony and misdemeanor cases dating back over three decades that are eligible to be denied .
