Confusion took hold of Guinea this Sunday after President Alpha Condé was detained by the military, who declared the dissolution of the Constitution and the Government in a coup.
Condé, who ruled firmly since 2010 this West African country, was arrested today by members of the Army Special Forces Group , said the commander of that elite corps, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, identified by local media as a former French legionary who returned to Guinea in 2018.
The colonel announced, in a video disseminated on social networks echoed by the Guinean media, that the military agreed to “ dissolve the Constitution in force ”and the Government of this nation, which became independent from France in 1958.
entity is with us, we have decided to dissolve the Government, dissolve the Constitution in force, dissolve the institutions and close the land and air borders “, said Doumbouya.
” We call our brothers of arms to unity, in order to satisfy the legitimate aspirations of the people of Guinea ”, stressed the coup leader.
AN “INCLUSIVE AND PEACEFUL ”
Afterwards, Doumbouya appeared on state television, flanked by several soldiers and with the national flag on their shoulders, to inform about the creation of the “National Committee for Grouping and Development” with the objective of “initiating a national consultation to open an inclusive and peaceful transition”.
The colonel justified the coup by “the lack of respect for democratic principles, excessive politicization of public administration, financial mismanagement, endemic poverty and corruption” that, in his opinion, prevail in the p aís.
The streets in the area were left deserted as shots continued to be heard and, according to witnesses, armored vehicles were deployed in the direction of the presidential palace.
At the moment, the riot seems to have a certain popular support, as many citizens took to the streets of Conakry shouting “ Long live the Army! Long live the coup! “.
