Labor Day 2021: when is it and why is it celebrated in September

In many countries the calendar has set aside May 1 to celebrate Labor Day, a date established internationally to remember more than 28, 000 workers who worked in about 5, 000 factories in Chicago and who demonstrated in the streets of the city to demand that their working hours be shortened because they came to work up to 16 hours per day.

Unfortunately this situation culminated in the so-called Haymarket Square Massacre 3 days later, where countless workers lost their lives.

Despite the mass struggle work began in the United States, in the country it was decided to recognize them on a completely different day, establishing that this would be held in September and would be known as Labor Day .

When is Labor Day commemorated?

Labor Day in the US is celebrated on the first Monday in September; therefore, no is a fixed date.

The first states to establish this holiday by law were New York, Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts and New Jersey, in 1887.

Was the 28 of June 1884 when the US Congress passed a law to make the first Monday in September a legal holiday.

Origin of Labor Day

Official versions suggest that the co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, Peter J. McGuire, was the first person to one day suggest honoring those who “dug and carved the greatness we see today.”

But there is also a version that points to Matthew Magure as the author of this holiday.

It was the President Grover Cleveland who decreed that Labor Day would be celebrated in September, since the May holidays were related to “socialist” issues and it was in 1884 when it decreed that the first Monday of the ninth month of the year would be a Labor Day holiday.

The first Labor Day celebration was recorded on September 5, 1882 in New York, with a parade from the Central Labor Union.
