Sales of Mexican avocados in the US are booming as the coronavirus pandemic advances , forcing more and more people to cook at home.

In fact, the Avocados from Mexico (AFM) company broke its annual sales record, selling 2, 100 million pounds of avocados in the United States last year. The company estimates that it will sell 2, 300 million pounds in 2021 .

“The pandemic has divided the world into two groups, those who have done it really well and those who have done it badly. Fortunately, Avocados From Mexico has been in the group that has done well, “said Álvaro Luque, CEO and president of AFM.

AFM, an alliance between packers and Mexican avocado producers and US importers, has been since 2020 the main marketing arm of the fruit, which has become a staple food in many US households just as it is in Mexico.

Avocado sales in the United States generally increase on Cinco de Mayo and the Super Bowl , two occasions that are US holidays, and are not so important in Mexico.

Mexican avocados began to be marketed large scale in 19 states in USA in 1997, and since then its sales have been growing. With the closure of restaurants due to the pandemic, avocado sales fell to 40%.

Therefore, l to AFM changed the marketing strategy and focused on coupons to reduce consumer prices . This helped boost sales of the fruit, as reported in The Hill .

Currently, Mexican avocados constitute the 82% of all avocado sales in the United States, generating $ 6, 500 millions of dollars and more than 19, 000 jobs in the U.S., according to an annual report released by Texas A&M University.
