North and South Korea, neighboring nations but politically estranged for more than six decades, reestablished suspended communication channels and their leaders agreed to improve ties, reported today both governments.
Seoul’s announcement was immediately confirmed by Pyongyang’s state media. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reached the agreement during several letter exchanges since April, the presidential office in South Korea said.
Both leaders agreed to “reestablish mutual trust and develop their relationships as soon as possible,” said South Korean spokesman Park Soo Hyun, in a televised briefing from the Blue House, executive office and official residence of the presidency in Seoul.
