A few days after the expiration of the moratorium on evictions endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), various civil organizations, as well as some representatives of national politics have requested publicly extend the deadline, otherwise thousands of Americans could be left without a roof over the next few weeks or two months .
This comes in a context where there has been a delay in the distribution of rental aid by the government federal, same supports that were endorsed by federal congressmen. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, urged the Biden administration to prevent the CDC’s ban on most evictions from expiring on 31 of July.
Ocasio-Cortez stated that it was “unwise” to allow the ban to expire when to distribute the $ 46 billion dollars in federal rental assistance earmarked for tenants, landlords and utility companies.
According to a survey conducted by the Census Bureau, between the 23 June and July 5, more than 4.7 million Americans are not up to date with their housing payments and expect to be evicted or executed within two months. About eight million also said they don’t wait to make their next housing payment on time.
These numbers are not only discouraging, since Delta variant infections are spreading throughout the country, a situation that is making the population and various authorities in states and counties. This fact has resulted in people not going out to find employment and, therefore, they depend on government aid.
When the moratorium was approved of eviction that concludes next week, it was thought that at this point in the year with the advance in vaccination and with the reopening of economic activities, millions of Americans would have to be back in the workplace by now, the reality is that not so and in case an extension is not authorized, evictions will be a big problem nationwide .
For this reason, the next few days will be crucial to know if the moratorium will be extended, for now we can expect greater pressure from legislators Democrats who are identified with the progressive wing, so not only Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be the only one to raise her voice on the issue.
