From the outset, for the United States the project immediately had the protest of native groups and environmental groups, who have not only opposed this project but also others such as Dakota Acces and Enbridge Line 3.
In their argument, all of these groups allege the environmental destruction that future oil spills could cause in an expansion of oil production.
After so much discussion, finally construction stalled during the presidency d e Barack Obama and was retaken again by former President Donald Trump in the year 2017 . Then, the project resumed its course only last year, among the last actions of Trump and stipulated the sending of 830, 000 barrels of crude per day.
But in 2021, on the first day of Joe Biden’s presidency, one of the first actions of the US president was to revoke permission to the construction of the pipeline .
By Canada, Alberta is the province most interested in the project being carried out mainly because it already had an investment of 1, 000 million dollars in it. In fact, the governor of the province, Jason Kenney, said he was “frustrated” by the unsuccessful negotiations.
For the Albertians, the federal government of Canada, with Justin Trudeau in the lead, did not make enough efforts It is to avoid the cancellation of the project.
As well as the American side not all were detractors, 21 states had made the demand to revoke the cancellation of President Biden, so that the required permits would be granted. Both Republicans and Democrats have requested the reconsideration of this decision, due to the economic benefit it implies for the United States.
On the other hand, after the announcement of cancellation of the project by TC Energy, the Environmental groups and native tribes that have been opposed from the beginning, saw it as a historic moment in their struggle and applauded President Biden’s steadfastness in this regard.
“We hope that the administration Biden’s continue to move this country in the right direction by opposing the fuel projects f ossils. ”
One of the leaders of the campaign “Keep it in the Ground”, Dallas Goldtooth also celebrated the news, especially for the constancy of indigenous groups in their struggle.

This project, in total has a cost of $ 9, 000 million dollars and 1 , 930 kilometers long. It was proposed in the. year 2008 during the presidency of George W. Bush and Canadian Conservative Steven Harper.
At the moment, it seems that President Biden will hardly allow himself to be convinced of a change of decision.
