The meat producing company JBS suffered from a strong cyber hack that affected the firm could not distribute the product to consumers . This situation is a huge red flag for the country, since there may be a great shortage of meat and this can skyrocket prices .

Yesterday a senior Costco executive stated that the prices of meat products have risen considerably as a result of the pandemic. What happened with the firm JBS, considered the largest meat processor in the world, could deepen this situation that would bring a strong economic impact.

The cyber attack forced JBS to suspend part of its production in plants in the United States and Canada, hours after reporting a cyber attack. According to a company statement, the attack was detected by JBS Australia on Sunday, which affected “some of the servers that support IT systems in North America and Australia.”

Given what happened, JBS explained that its backup servers were not affected, ensuring that its technical staff are making the necessary efforts to restore the systems and reduce the impact it has already had on the meat industry .

The topic has become so relevant that the federal authorities are already taking action on the matter including the FBI . The White House deputy press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, reported that they are in contact with the meat companies to notify them of what happened and assess “any impact on distribution.”

Karine Jean-Pierre stated that “the president has ordered the administration to determine what we can do to mitigate any impact that may become necessary.” So far, it has not been clear who carried out the cyberattack, but the White House reported that the group criminal behind the hack, perhaps, comes from Russia .

At the moment, JBS has not reported the economic impact that the cyber attack on the company has represented, the truth is that the fact that the United States government intervenes is synonymous with concern in the livestock sector.

According to the USDA, prices of select and select cuts of US beef shipped to wholesale buyers in large boxes each increased more than 1 %. In the last year, meat prices soared 10%, according to the federal agency.
