Minnesota Attorney General Will Take Case Against Former Officer Kim Potter Over Daunte Wright Death

The attorney general of Minnesota , Keith Ellison , who accused the ex-agent Derek Chauvin in the past, will take the case against the former officer Kim Potter for the second degree murder of Daunte Wright .

The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office Keith Ellison announced Friday that it plans to prosecute the case against the former Brooklyn Center police officer who killed shot Daunte Wright , from 20 years, during a traffic stop, reported WCCO.

Ellison’s office said in a statement that it will oversee the indictment, review of evidence and charges brought against former officer Kim Potter , who was charged with murder in the second degree in April.

Wright was stopped by Potter for having expired tags on his vehicle, but during the stop it was discovered that he had an outstanding arrest warrant.

Body camera footage showed that when two officers attempted to handcuff Wright, he attempted to return to his car. Then an officer is heard shouting “tástalo” several times.

Daunte Wright was killed by the police approximately to 10 miles from Hennepin County Government Center , where the trial of Derek Chauvin , and when the country was observing a case that had triggered a national reckoning for police reform and racial justice.

The murder of an African American man by a white police officer sparked another round of protests and calls for reform in a city that is still reeling for the murder of George Floyd in May d last year.

Former Brooklyn Center Police Chief, Tim Gannon, who resigned after the shooting, said it looked like Potter intended to reach for his stun gun, but accidentally grabbed his firearm.

Potter resigned from the police department two days after the shooting, which marked the end of his career for 26 years in the department. She will face trial in December.

“Prosecutors are ministers of justice. This means that we must and will follow justice wherever it leads us ”, Ellison said in a statement . “I promise the Wright family and all Minnesotans that I will handle this prosecution responsibly and consistent with the law, and that I will be guided by the values ​​of accountability and transparency.”

The murder of Wright , which occurred during the murder trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd last year , sparked demonstrations in Brooklyn Center and other cities.

A jury convicted Chauvin in April for murder in the second and third degree, as well as murder in the second degree.

The processing of the case of Potter will be directed by the aux secretary iliary Matthew Frank , who was the presenting attorney at Chauvin’s trial. Ellison plans to “actively assist” in the case.

The office of Ellison said that the first step, which is to review the evidence and charges against Potter, is already underway.
