Gavin Newsom's Proposal for Undocumented Adults 60 and Over to Have Health Coverage

The adults of 60 years or older without immigration status in California would obtain medical coverage according to the proposal announced on Friday by Governor Gavin Newsom .

The proposal, which had already been raised before the start of the pandemic, spoiled, is funded by $ 859 million dollars and arrived during the Governor Newsom’s presentation of the state budget . California estimates a budget surplus of about $ 75, 000 million dollars.

Newsom’s Medi-Cal health coverage proposal was originally expanded to include individuals undocumented of 65 years or more in 2020 , but now the age was reduced to 60 years to include more people, which supposes a possible benefit for about 75, 000 undocumented immigrants as of May 2022 .

The proposal of Gavin Newsom must be approved by 15 June.

Currently Medi -Cal covers immigrants under 26 years, a provision that made California the first state to provide coverage to adults.

According to an analysis by Politico.com, “Democrats consider that expanded r Medi-Cal to undocumented seniors is a deposit of a greater promise to provide coverage to all Californians regardless of their immigration status ”.

According to a recently released legislative report, nearly 1 million immigrants in California would get health coverage if immigration status were no longer a condition.

“I think we are in the best position to do the most significant progress we’ve ever made, ”said State Senator María Elena Durazo. “We are going to keep pushing to include more people without insurance” .
