One of the constants in the current administration of the Mexican government is skip the agreements to favor what its president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, considers best for their interests .

For that reason the American Petroleum Institute (API , for its acronym in English) sent a letter to different secretaries of the United States, in which he accuses the government of the Mexican president of breach the agreements established in the Trade Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC ) and asks them to act accordingly in the face of what they consider to be a series of acts discriminatory against US investors in Mexico.

Mike Sommers, API president, sent the document on Wednesday noting that: “President López Obrador has spearheaded important amendments sa two laws, the Electricity Industry Law and the Hydrocarbons Law, to change the market rules in favor of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and against private companies. ”

The letter specifies that: “The common denominator of both laws is to hinder new private investment in the energy sector, as well as to destroy the value of private assets that are already operating in violation of Mexico’s commitments under NAFTA and T-MEC ”.

“Recently, President López Obrador has increased such actions, both in scope and severity, to change the fundamentals of the energy sector in Mexico,” said Sommers in the document that is addressed to the secretaries of State, Anthony Blinken; of Energy, Jennifer Granholm; Commerce, Gina Raimondo and the United States commercial representative, Katherine Tai.

The Latinus site published that this is not the first time that the API complains about discriminatory actions by the López Obrador government towards US companies that have investments in the Mexican energy market.

Last year the API approached then-President Trump, for denounce that the regulatory actions of the current Mexican administration hampered the operations of US investors , as they increasingly face more difficulties in obtaining permits that allow them to carry out their activities.

Faced with the constant current Mexican government, Sommers asked President Joe Biden to continue interacting diplomatically with e President López Obrador , so that the commitments agreed in the T-MEC are respected and that US investors and exporters are treated fairly .
