Halima Cisse, a Malian woman from 25 years old, she gave birth to nine babies, two more than the doctors had told her she had in her womb.

The delivery took place in Morocco, where she was transferred by the Malian government to receive specialized care.

The babies, five girls and four boys, were delivered by caesarean section and are in good health , according to Fanta Siby, Mali’s Minister of Health.

“I’m very happy,” her husband told the BBC. “My wife and the babies are fine.”

It is extremely rare to see nonuplets being born, and the multiple complications during and after childbirth often cause some of the babies do not survive.

Siby congratulated the team of doctors from both countries who supported the birth of the children for the “happy result”.

A pregnancy that caused a sensation in Mali

Halima Cisse’s pregnancy became a topic that fascinated Malian society, even when it was believed that she only carried septuplets in her belly, as reported by the news agency Reuters .

Doctors in Mali were concerned about the well-being and chances of survival of the babies and consequently the government intervened.

Cisse spent two weeks in a hospital in Bamako, the capital of Mali, but the authorities made the decision to transfer the pregnant woman to Morocco on 30 of March, details the Minister of Health of Mali.

And after five weeks in a clinic in Morocco, gave delivered on Tuesday.

A very rare case

A woman who had eight babies in the US in the year 2009 obtained the Guinness record for the highest number of children born (and surviving) in a single birth.

Nonuplet cases are extremely rare.

In the past only had been registered only two cases of nonuplets , one in a female in Australia in 1971 and another in Malaysia in 1999, but none of the babies survived more than a few days.

The octuplets of Nadya Suleman , world record holder, have grown up to now have 12 years. She conceived them through in vitro fertilization.

Halima Cisse’s husband is still in Mali with the couple’s eldest daughter. He says that he has been in constant contact with his wife and that he is not worried about the future of the family.

God gave us these children . He is the one who decides what will happen to them. I don’t care about that. When the Almighty does something, he knows why, ”Adjudant Kader Arby told BBC Afrique.

The happy father also assures that his family has been overwhelmed by the support you have received.

“Everyone called me! They all called! The Malian authorities called to express their joy. I appreciate it… Even the president called me ”.
