An Oklahoma man was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder after confessing to his family’s crime.
Jacob Mayhugh22, avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty in connection with the triple murders in Chickasha of his mother and father, Patty and James Mayhughand his sister, Shayla Mayhughas reported by local news stations such as OKC FOX and KFOR.
Court records indicate Jacob was sentenced without the possibility of parole.
The family was found dead from gunshot wounds in their residence on the morning of May 11. According to KOCO-TV, Jacob was found after a multi-day search.
The authorities said that Jacob planned the murders and bought a rifle on April 25KFOR reported. The outlet added that at least two AR-type magazines stocked with ammunition were recovered from Jacob’s vehicle at the time of his arrest, as well as a wallet and $750 in cash.
In addition to killing his family, prosecutors believed that Jacob may have committed other violent crimes: Court documents indicate that “the defendant’s plan, as detailed in his interview, was to commit additional acts of violence.”
He would have pizza for dinner with his family
An affidavit previously obtained by local news stations said Jacob left his girlfriend’s house and said he was going to dinner with his family.
On the afternoon of May 10, Mayhugh received a text message from his mother saying her family was meeting at her house and that pizza was ready for everyone for dinner. The defendant told his girlfriend he was headed there and, according to investigators, opened fire on her family when he arrived.
Citing court documents, KOCO-TV reported that Jacob then He turned off his cell phone and deactivated his Facebook profile the night he killed his family.
According to the affidavit, police were not called until May 11, when neighbors reported seeing shell casings outside the family’s home and called 911 about “possible deceased persons inside the home.”
Patty Mayhugh was discovered dead next to the door. The bodies of James and Shayla Mayhugh were found in the living room. All had been fatally shot..
Jacob Mayhugh’s vehicle was eventually seen on several surveillance cameras in Oklahoma City, and his girlfriend identified him in the footage.
