Ohio prison guard dies after being attacked by inmate on Christmas Day

A corrections officer died after an inmate assaulted him on Christmas morning, authorities said.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said the corrections officer Andrew Lansing he died “after an inmate assaulted him” that morning at Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe.

“The loss of a staff member is difficult, but losing a family member on Christmas Day at the hands of someone in our custody is an incomprehensible tragedy,” department director Annette Chambers-Smith said in a statement. .

“Instead of going home after his shift to be with his family this holiday, Officer Lansing made the ultimate sacrifice.”eitherand our agency will never be the same,” Chambers-Smith added.

The attack occurred during Lansing’s shift on Christmas Day, a time when most of his coworkers were celebrating with family and loved ones.

Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe, Ohio, houses more than 2,000 inmates.

No details about the alleged assault or the inmate were immediately released. It was said that the prison was “operating under restricted movement” and that the Ohio State Highway Patrol was investigating.

“The suspected inmate has been transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility,” the department said.

Lansing was described as “a long-time and highly respected employee” at the prison, “well-liked by his colleagues.”

“He was a friendly and outgoing officer who treated everyone with respect and was always professional”the department stated.

It was seen on his LinkedIn page that Lansing had worked as a correctional officer for more than 20 years and took the job seriously.

“Throughout my more than twenty years of experience, I have worked hard to improve myself through training, experience and education. “I am always willing to go the extra mile and am not willing to accept anything but the best in myself,” he wrote.
