In a movement that redefines geopolitical and military alliances, Russia has decided to deliver MiG-29 and Su-27 fighter jets to North Korea as a reward for his support in the war against Ukraine. This decision not only strengthens ties between both countries but also raises serious questions about the strategic implications of this exchange in the Northeast Asia region.
MiG-29 capabilities
The Mikoyan MiG-29, developed in the 1970sis a twin-engine fighter designed for air superiority missions. With a length of 17.32 meters and a wingspan of 11.36 meters, it can reach speeds of up to 2,400 km/h and operate at altitudes of up to 18,000 meters.
Its maneuverability and agility make it effective in close aerial combat.. It is equipped with a radar capable of detecting multiple targets and can carry a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.
Su-27 capabilities
The Sukhoi Su-27 is a long-range fighter designed for air superiority and air defense missions.. With a length of 21.9 meters and a wingspan of 14.7 meters, it can reach speeds of up to 2,500 km/h and operate at altitudes above 18,000 meters. It stands out for its great maneuverability and ability to perform complex maneuvers. It is equipped with a long-range radar and can carry a wide range of weapons.including medium and long range missiles.
Strategic implications
The addition of these fighters represents a significant improvement for the North Korean Air Forcewhich currently mainly operates obsolete aircraft such as the MiG-17, MiG-19 and MiG-21. Although the MiG-29 and Su-27 are not the most advanced fighters in the Russian arsenal, their transfer will provide North Korea with improved air capability, especially compared to its current fleet.
However, it is important to highlight that South Korea has a modern air force, equipped with advanced fighters such as the F-35, F-16 and the development of the KF-21. Therefore, although the transfer of MiG-29 and Su-27 will enhance North Korea’s capabilities, it will not necessarily balance the scales in terms of air power on the Korean Peninsula.
The transfer of these fighters also raises questions about North Korea’s ability to maintain and operate these aircraft effectively.given the state of its military infrastructure and the limitations imposed by international sanctions. Furthermore, the international community observes with concern this strengthening of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, considering the implications for regional stability and power dynamics in Northeast Asia.
The delivery of the MiG-29 and Su-27 to North Korea is a strategic move that reinforces the alliance between Moscow and Pyongyangproviding the latter with an improvement in its air capabilities, although still limited compared to the air forces of its regional neighbors.
