The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, announced the nomination of Herschel Walker as ambassador to the Bahamas, a former American football star who in 2022 lost the election for Georgia senator for the Republican Party.
“Herschel has spent decades serving as an ambassador for our nation’s youth, our men and women in the military, and national and international athletes,” Trump said on social media.
Trump highlighted in a statement that Walker was a “great player” in the NFL league, as well as a Heisman Trophy winner. which is awarded to the best college football player; a “successful businessman” and a “tireless advocate for youth sports.”
“Congratulations, Herschel! “You will make Georgia and our entire nation proud because we know you will always put America first,” he declared.
Walker’s nomination needs to be confirmed by the Senate to take office.
Walker, 62, lost the 2022 election for Georgia senator against Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock, which made it easier for Joe Biden’s government to retain the majority in the chamber.
The Republican, considered a Trump pupil, generated controversy because he campaigned against abortion rights despite the fact that two women accused him of having financed their termination of pregnancies.
Walker’s nomination as ambassador to the Bahamas is not the only one of a Trump ally who lost an election, given that the president-elect has also announced the appointment of Kari Lake, who lost the elections for governor of Arizona and senator for the same state, as director of the state media Voice of America.
Walker rose to national prominence as a star running back for the Georgia Bulldogs, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1982. He spent his early professional years in the United States Football League and then moved on to the NFL.
With the Dallas Cowboys he earned consecutive Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors from 1987 to 1988.the year Walker was traded to the Minnesota Vikings.
