Despite his Americanist past, the living legend of Mexican soccer, Hugo Sánchez, He could not deny the cross of his parish by pointing out that the Águilas’ three-time championship does not make them the best team in the MX League, but rather the UNAM Pumas who saw him born towards the great history he had in international football.

Hugo, in his participation in the Fútbol Picante program, put his finger on the sore spot with his statements regarding to the third consecutive crowning of the Eagles in the history of short tournaments to set a new mark in Aztec football.

“America is the biggest winner, but not the greatest. For me, the greatest is Pumas”, He mentioned without fear of being wrong and then added a historical fact that the feline squad has in its history against Real Madrid: “I remind you that the only team that beat Real Madrid is Pumas.”

Obviously, Hugo Sánchez did not hesitate to applaud the work done by the Coapa teamespecially because at first it seemed that they were not going to achieve anything due to a regular tournament full of twists and turns that supposedly revealed internal problems, but which in the end was the support to promote an Americanist return to high levels in the league.

“I can congratulate Jardine, who did an extraordinary job, not only in this tournamentwhich was more difficult, more complicated. But they ended up playing very well, they came from less to more, it is a tremendous merit,” he said.

Pumas with 13 years of title drought

Despite Hugo Sánchez’s comments, the coldness of the numbers shows that America wins by nine championships to the UNAM Pumas who have won seven Mexican soccer championships and that since the Clausura 2011 tournament they have not known what it is to lift the champions’ cup.

On that occasion they defeated the Monarcas Morelia with Guillermo Vázquez Jr. at the helm they fail to win the crown and where Hugo Sánchez was important with two titles in the 2004 Clausura and Apertura tournaments, defeating Chivas on penalties and later the Rayados de Monterrey.

It should be noted that Pumas was champion with Pumas both as a player and as a coach, This organization being fundamental in its development to play in European football, where it had its maximum splendor with Real Madrid, where it won four scoring titles and one with Atlético de Madrid.
