Mexican Nacho Hierro changes team and is now the sports director of Costa Rica

Ignacio Hierrothe former club player of the Liga MX as America and Chivaswas presented this Monday by the as Costa Rican Football Federation (FCRF) as the new sports director of national teams.

The former Mexican national team will also have as a priority objective to enhance the country’s talent to compete at an international level, as can be read in the official statement published by the FCRF on its website and disseminated through its social networks.

According to the letter, Hierro, who replaces the Argentine Claudio Vivas in office, will begin work next January with the main mission of “building a clear line of work that enhances Costa Rican talent with the demands of world football.”

“His participation as sports director of the Mexican National Teams stands out.from July 2019 to August 2022. Under his management, the Mexican team achieved Qualification for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, and the Bronze Medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” the Costa Rican federation recalled.

Hierro was also sports director at Everton de Viña del Mar, in Chile, at the Mexican Atlas and his last experience was at Costa Rican Sporting in the last two years.

The Mexican also developed a career as a soccer player in Mexican teams such as América, Chivas, Atlante, Pachuca, Monterrey, Puebla and León, as well as in the Mexican national team.

Vivas, whom Hierro replaces, did not renew his contract that expired this December.

The former manager took over as interim coach of Costa Rica last August, after the departure of fellow Argentine Gustavo Alfaro, for whom Paraguay paid the contract termination clause.

After Hierro’s hiring, the FCRF will focus on finding the new coach who will have to face the friendly matches in 2025, a play-off against Belize in March for a ticket to the Concacaf Gold Cup; eventually the Gold Cup in the middle of the year and the 2026 World Cup qualifier.
