Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum He received his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro this Monday at the National Palaceto outline a common agenda in the face of the migration crisis, while urging greater regional integration.
Sheinbaum highlighted on his social networks that they talked about the importance of unity between progressive governments and the strengthening of ties in Latin America and the Caribbean.
“We spoke with the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, about the importance of unity between progressive governmentsas well as the union of Latin America and the Caribbean,” he noted in X.
According to a statement from the Colombian Government, the heads of state agreed to exchange information to confront the migration crisis “in a more orderly manner.”
Also, the note indicated, it was guaranteed to “improve the treatment of Colombian citizens in Mexican airports due to complaints of mistreatment in the past.”
Another notable agreement was the reactivation of the search for the remains of the independence leader and former president of Colombia, José María Melowho stood out as “a key figure in the history shared between both countries.”
The messages shared on the social networks of both leaders were accompanied by a short video in which Sheinbaum can be seen walking through the corridors and gardens of the National Palace located in the center of the Mexican capital to receive Petro with a hug.
Both walked to the office of the Mexican presidency, where they sat down to talk and take an official photo, until they are seen walking again towards the exit of Sheinbaum’s residence and they say goodbye, after exchanging some gifts.
Petro arrived in central Mexico on a Colombian Air Force plane this Sunday and was received with a red carpet by the chancellor, Juan Ramón de la Fuente.
Just a month ago, Latin American leaders held their second bilateral meeting at the G20 Leaders Summit, held in Brazil, where they highlighted the strength of the relationship between Mexico and Colombia, based on cooperation, trade and deep cultural ties.
Previously, Petro attended Sheinbaum’s inauguration as the first female president of Mexico on October 1, and visited her at the National Palace.
