With the departure of Jorge Ramos from Univision, a historic era for Spanish-language journalism in the United States culminates, as the journalist closed a stage that marked not only his career, but also the way in which millions of Latinos were informed for decades.
On Friday, December 13, Ramos presented his last broadcast of the Univision newscast, and this Sunday, the 15th, the final episode of his Sunday program “Al Punto” was broadcast. From the set that saw him share crucial stories and address complex topics for 17 years, Jorge Ramos dedicated some farewell words full of reflection, gratitude and purpose.
In his message, the journalist reviewed the historical events that “Al Punto” covered since its inception in 2007, mentioning moments that defined United States politics and the growing influence of the Latino community. “This program forces us to reflect on what has happened in the United States in the last 17 years”said Ramos, recalling milestones such as the election of Barack Obama, the first African-American president, and the political impact of Donald Trump in his two administrations.
Ramos highlighted how, in that period, Latin power has grown significantly. “We are more than 60 million Hispanics in the United States. Today we have more congressmen, more senators and more representatives in all positions… but we still do not have the representation that corresponds to us.”he stated, referring to the disparity between the size of the Latino population and its representation in the Senate.
With his characteristic commitment to public service, Jorge Ramos stressed the importance of raising our voices as a community, ensuring that journalism has always been a tool to improve the lives of Latinos and immigrants. “I hope that in all these years we have contributed to Latinos and immigrants living better and having greater opportunities”he added.
Finally, he thanked his team and the audience who accompanied him throughout this journey: “We leave in peace”. With those words, he closed the cycle of a program that became a benchmark in journalism for Hispanics in the United States.
