Former FBI informant pleads guilty to lying about Biden family taking bribes

Alexander Smirnov, who was accused of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by falsely claiming that President Joe Biden and his son Hunter had accepted bribes, pleaded guilty.

In February of this year, special prosecutor David Weiss, who was appointed to lead the investigations into the Hunter Biden case, He accused the Californian of inventing a story with the aim of creating instability around the presidential family.

Smirnov, assumed the role of alleged confidential informant and without showing evidence to support his testimony, He told an FBI agent contacted in 2020 that, years ago, both Joe Biden and his son Hunter had each accepted $5,000,000, money from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

However, after corroborating through several documents presented that it was all an invention aimed at calling into question the honorability of the nation’s leader at a time when the Republicans intended to investigate him with the aim of finding sufficient arguments to demand a trial against him.

The court evidence presented indicates that Smirnov demonstrated bias against Joe Biden during interviews he held with FBI agents in September 2023.

Among his false statements he also claimed that the Democrat had maintained communication with Russian officials.

After several months of analyzing his legal situation, prosecutors in Weiss’s office announced that Alexander Smirnov will plead guilty to one count of creating a false federal record and three tax-related counts pending sentencing. which will emerge until next year.

The 43-year-old defendant could remain in prison for up to six years, plus an additional one on supervised release.

In addition, he will have to pay $675,502 in restitution, all of this pursuant to the plea agreement filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

In this way, David Weiss’ time as attorney general will most likely be coming to an end, since after the pardon that Joe Biden granted to his son Hunter, there is no longer anything pending related to said case.
