The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, is “stable” and “without consequences”after undergoing emergency surgery in Sao Paulo early Tuesday morning for an intracranial hemorrhage and will remain hospitalized until next week, his medical team reported.

Lula was rushed to the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital in Sao Paulo on Monday night after experiencing headaches that doctors attributed to the fall he suffered almost two months ago.

“He underwent surgery to drain the hematoma, bleeding in the brain“Dr. Roberto Kalil explained in a press conference, who also indicated that the operation lasted about two hours and was carried out “without complications.”

“He had no after-effects” from the operation

“He is stable, talking normally and feeding”and “it had no consequences,” he added after the intervention.

Lula will be “under observation” in the Intensive Care Unit for the next 48 hours, and will remain hospitalized until “next week.”

The doctors explained that an MRI done in Brasilia had shown an “intracranial hemorrhage.”

“It is a common type of complication (…) mainly in older people,” added neurologist Rogerio Tuma.

The first lady, Ronsangela ‘Janja’ da Silva, 58, sent a message of calm and thanked the demonstrations of affection.

“After a successful surgery, tonight’s anguish gave way to tranquility and the certainty that, with the dedication of the medical team, and the faith and love of the people, he will soon return to work,” he wrote on Instagram.
