This Wednesday, Mexico and the United States endorsed joint efforts against fentanyl and other synthetic drugs, a few weeks before Donald Trump’s return to the White House, at the first ‘Meeting of Forensic Chemists and Prosecutors on Synthetic Drugs’ in the Mexican capital.

Organized by the Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the United States Embassy in Mexico, the event brought together dozens of US officials and the Attorney General’s Office of the Mexican Republic ( FGR).

Katie Stana, director of the INL, mentioned that the conference, which takes place on December 4 and 5, “will focus on addressing the issues of methamphetamine and fentanyl production”.

“Emerging trends, the role of chemical precursors, advanced chemical detection methods and strategies to carry out successful criminal investigations will be analyzed,” Stana commented during the opening of the event open to the media.

However, when questioned about these trends and strategies, the official refused to give more details.

For her part, Mavil López Casamichana, in charge of the Criminalistics Laboratory Unit in the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) of the FGR, highlighted the “unique” opportunity of the meeting to strengthen the ties between the disciplines that work together to solve the cases.

Among the “most critical and urgent topics of today”, López Casamichana highlighted “the impact of fentanyl and the vital role that forensic science plays against the expansion of this global threat.” and complex and devastating for society, which are the trafficking and production and abuse of opioids.”

The meeting occurs after on Tuesday the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico (SSPC) reported on an operation carried out in Sinaloa, a state in the northwest of the country, in which they confiscated about 300 kilos of fentanyl in a home and another 800 kilos of the same drug in a van.

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, He stated in his conference this Wednesday that this is the “largest seizure ever made” of fentanyl pills, equivalent to more than 20 million doses.which could have generated close to 8,000 million pesos (400 million dollars) on the black market.

The event at the US Embassy in Mexico also occurs as pressure grows from the president-elect of the United States, Trump, for Mexico to control fentanyl trafficking.

In particular because of the threat by Trump, who will take office on January 20, that one of his first executive orders will be to impose 25% tariffs on “all products” from Mexico and Canada, until the invasion of “stops” illegal migrants and drugs, particularly fentanyl.
