The Israeli Army confirmed this Monday the launch by the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah of two projectiles against northern Israelthe first incident of this type since the ceasefire between the two came into effect on November 27.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack in a statementwithout providing details, and indicated that it was directed against an Israeli position in Ruwaisat al Alam, in the disputed border area of Kfar Chuba.
The Shiite movement, considered terrorist by the European Union and various countries, defended this act as an “initial warning defensive response,” after what it described as repeated violations of the clauses of the ceasefire agreement by Israel.
The unfulfilled points
According to the group, among the breaches of the truce are “shooting against civilians and airstrikes in several parts of Lebanon that led to the death of citizens and injuries to others”while Hezbollah also denounced “the continued violation of Lebanese airspace” by Israeli fighter jets.
According to the Israeli Army, the two projectiles fell in unpopulated areas near Mount Dov, causing no casualties. The Israeli media Haaretz assured that both projectiles were mortars.
Since the truce came into force, both sides have accused each other of failing to comply with it, although it remains in force and attacks in urban spaces have been drastically reduced.
They demand withdrawal of Israeli soldiers
This morning, the president of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, accused Israel of violating the ceasefire on at least 54 occasions, and asked the committee in charge of supervising the implementation of the truce to force Israeli soldiers to leave the country.
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, for his part, defended that Israel is simply “enforcing” the agreementwhich provides for the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters north of the Litani River and the gradual departure of Israeli troops from Lebanon within 60 days.
Both yesterday and today, the Israeli Army carried out several attacks in Lebanon, according to a military statement, attacking military vehicles near an alleged missile factory in the eastern Bekaa Valley.
Israel also assured that it was aware of the death of a member of the Lebanese security forces. in one of his attacks in the south, ensuring that the incident “is under investigation.”
Israel promises to respond “firmly”
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that Israel will respond “firmly” to the launch of two projectiles claimed today by the Lebanese Shiite group.
“Hezbollah’s fire (…) constitutes a serious violation of the ceasefire, and Israel will respond firmly. “We are determined to continue implementing the ceasefire and respond to any violation by Hezbollah, whether minor or serious,” Netanyahu said in a message sent by his office.
