Winter storms hit Northeast, delaying holiday weekend travel

Snow storms hit the northeastern United States on Saturday, in the Great Lakes region, and had millions of people under alert, also affecting those who have plans to travel after the end of the Thanksgiving holiday.

At least 30 inches had fallen in several places in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and along the Lake Erie shoreline in northern Pennsylvania and western New York, the National Weather Service said Saturday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued weather alerts covering about 16 million people, mostly from states like Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, northern New York and Pennsylvania.

The storm will continue in the coming days in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania and By Tuesday it could leave an accumulation of up to five feet of snow in certain areas.

New York authorities reported on Saturday that some sections of interstate highways between this state and Pennsylvania “remain impassable,” while the Erie International Airport in Pennsylvania was closed due to bad weather, which caused up to about 30 inches of snow.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro issued a disaster declaration on Saturday for Erie County, in the north of this state.

Sections of Interstate 90, which crosses New York and Pennsylvania, are closed to traffic and even members of the National Guard have been dispatched to the most affected areas of this road.

Up to 30 inches of snow has fallen in northern Michigan.

American media show this Saturday some areas of the two states covered in snow and ice due to the icy and humid winds that are being recorded, a phenomenon known as the “lake effect”, that with temperatures below zero, snowfall amplifies and that began on Thursday night.

The social media accounts of different state agencies also publish videos of cleaning teams at work to clear roads and public roadsto ask residents to avoid driving and stay home as much as possible.

In cities like Chicago and Indianapolis, and others further south like Nashville in Tennessee, Atlanta (Georgia) and Tallahassee (Florida), during this weekend andThe thermometer will drop to temperatures typical of mid-January, according to NWS.
