The Mercedes technology that Lamborghini debuted first

This indirect collaboration has given an interesting twist to the story of electrification in the automotive sector. The Lamborghini Revuelto, the Italian firm’s first plug-in hybrid, became the showcase for these compact engines and high performance that combine power with efficiency.

Beyond the Revuelto, other models such as the Lamborghini Temerario have also adopted this technology, demonstrating its ability to raise performance and design standards in hybrid supercars.

The impact of axial flux engines on Lamborghini

The technological heart of the Lamborghini Revuelto and Temerario is a hybrid propulsion system which combines the power of an internal combustion engine with Yasa’s innovative axial flow engines.

In the case of the Revuelto, a V12 block is complemented by two axial flux electric motors located on the front axle.

These little engines, With a weight of just 17.2 kg and a thickness of 70 mm, they deliver a combined power of 300 HP, maximizing the weight-power-size ratio.

The Revuelto reaches an impressive 1,015 HP thanks to the synergy between the combustion engine and the electric ones, while the Temerario, With a V8 engine as the protagonist, it achieves 920 HP.

Both models benefit from a compact 3.8 kWh battery pack that optimizes performance without compromising the vehicles’ aerodynamic design.

A technology that defies limits

Axial flux motors stand out for their ability to offer high power in a compact format. This innovative design not only reduces the overall weight of the vehicle, but also improves energy distribution and thermal efficiency.

Each engine can generate up to 150 HP and 300 Nm of torque, ideal characteristics for the performance expected from a supercar like those from Lamborghini.

In addition to the front motors, both models incorporate a third electric motor in the rear that works as a generator. In the case of the Temerario, this generator is also provided by Yasa, while in the Revuelto it comes from the manufacturer Mahle.

And what about Mercedes-Benz?

Despite being the owner of Yasa since 2021, Mercedes-Benz has not yet introduced this technology in its series production models. However, that is about to change.

The German brand has plans to incorporate axial flux motors in its next generation of AMG models, such as the future AMG GT and a sporty SUV that will be developed on the new AMG.EA platform.

This strategic delay does not mean a lack of interest, but rather careful preparation to ensure that the technology is perfectly adapted to your standards and market needs.

The British company Yasa is not new to developing advanced technology for the automotive industry. Before its acquisition by Mercedes-Benz, it had already collaborated on projects such as the Koenigsegg Regera and Ferrari plug-in hybrid models, such as the SF90 Stradale and the 296 GTB.
