Through a prisoner exchange with Beijing, the White House secured the release of three Americans detained in China.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the National Security Council confirmed that citizens Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung regained their freedom.

“Soon, Kai Li will finally be reunited with his family because President Biden and his Administration also kept the faith and never stopped working to secure the release of Mr. Li and other Americans unjustly detained by the Chinese Government.

President Biden’s personal commitment to President Xi made this happy day possible.

Thanks to President Biden, all Americans unjustly detained in the People’s Republic of China will soon be home,” says part of the letter.

The State Department said Li and Swidan had been unjustly detained.

From the little that is known is that Swidan was arrested in 2012 on drug possession charges; while Li was detained in 2016 on charges of alleged espionage.

It turned out that, as soon as the three Americans return to the country, they will be transferred to the Brooke Army Medical Center, located on the outskirts of San Antonio, Texas, where their health status will be evaluated with the aim of reintegrating them into society as soon as possible. .

Nevertheless, During the current federal administration, the proper diplomatic management implemented results in more than 70 Americans released from countries such as Russia, Venezuela and Iran.

Information released by Dui Hua Foundation, a non-profit organization that advocates for the release of prisoners, in China there are nearly 200 Americans who remain unjustly deprived of their liberty, because they have not been tried in an objective and transparent manner. .

It should be noted that In August the White House also closed a prisoner exchange with the Russian government that made possible the release of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal journalist; by Paul Whelan, Navy veteran; and Alsou Kurmasheva, Russian-American radio journalist.
