The president of real MadridFlorentino Pérez, spoke for the first time about the 2024 Ballon d’Or award that Manchester City’s Spanish midfielder, Rodri, ended up winning over the Brazilian star of the merengue team, Vinícius Júnior, who appeared as the main favorite to win it.
The boss of the merengue team, who after learning on the same day of the award ceremony that Vini would not be the winner, canceled his trip to Paris so there was no representation of the team at the event. Now, Florentino Pérez pointed out that the Spanish player deserved recognition, just not this year.
“He has all our love and the recognition of Real Madrid. Without a doubt, he deserved a Ballon d’Or, but not this year. His Ballon d’Or was last year, when he won the treble and scored the decisive goal in the Champions League final.”said Pérez at the General Assembly of Members of Real Madrid.
The merengue boss avoided falling into the controversy of Vinícius Júnior’s merit of the award and went further by pointing out that some of the footballers from the merengue team who won LaLiga and the Champions League last season in addition to having good performances with their national teams should be recognized.
“Whether it was Vinícius, as the clamor of the world’s fans pointed out and the survey carried out by L’Equipe pointed out, giving Vinícius the winner with 41% of the votes, or our captain, Dani Carvajal, if he were given additional weight for the achievement of the Euro Cup by Spain”he pointed out.
“Or even Jude Bellingham, who also reached the final of the European Cup and had a spectacular season”added Florentino Pérez, referring to the other Real Madrid player who appeared among the five finalists for the 2024 Ballon d’Or award.
The president of Real Madrid continued with his rant by pointing out that the voting for this award must be carried out in a different way than the one carried out on this occasion for the first time that the award was organized between France Football magazine and UEFA.
“The Ballon d’Or has to be organized independently and the votes for this award must be in the hands of people of recognized prestige, the selectors, so that everyone understands that with their vote they also risk their reputation.”highlighted the white manager.
“We don’t know who voted for them, from countries we don’t know. Due to all these circumstances, Real Madrid considered it appropriate not to attend this edition of the Ballon d’Or gala.”Florentino Pérez closed, explaining the reason for the team’s decision not to travel to Paris.
