The Argentine government denounced acts of “harassment” and “intimidation” against the six Venezuelan opponents asylum in their embassy in Caracas.
“The Argentine Republic condemns the acts of harassment and intimidation against people asylum in the Argentine embassy in Caracas, currently under the diplomatic protection of the Government of Brazil,” said the Argentine Foreign Ministry in a statement published in X.
The Executive of Javier Milei asserted that the “deployment of armed forces”, the “closure of streets” around the Argentine Embassy in the capital of Venezuela and “other maneuvers constitute a disruption of the security that must be guaranteed to diplomatic headquarters in accordance with international law, as well as those who have requested diplomatic asylum.”
In its statement, Argentina made “a call to the international community to condemn these practices and demand the necessary safe conduct to allow the departure” from Venezuela of the six opponents who have taken refuge in the diplomatic headquarters since last March, after the Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office accused them. of various crimes, such as conspiracy and treason.
In addition, thanked the Government of Brazil for “representing Argentine interests in Venezuelaassuming the protection of diplomatic premises, and for their efforts to guarantee the safety of asylum seekers against harassment by the Venezuelan regime.”
Third episode of harassment
“The Argentine Republic reaffirms its commitment to the defense of human rightsrespect for international standards and the safety of those in a situation of asylum,” the statement concludes.
Pedro Urruchurtu, one of the asylum seekers and International coordinator of Vente Venezuela (VV) – a party led by María Corina Machado -, said in X that “hooded” agents with “long weapons” from the Directorate of Strategic and Tactical Actions (DAET) of The Bolivarian National Police (PNB) “surround the diplomatic headquarters and block street access.”
This is the third “siege” reported by Urruchurtu outside the Argentine residencewhose protection was assumed last August by Brazil after the expulsion of Argentine diplomats from Venezuela that same month.
In addition to Urruchurtu, Magalli Meda, campaign manager for the presidential elections, is also present at the Argentine embassy; Claudia Macero, VV Communications Coordinator; Omar González, former deputy; Humberto Villalobos, electoral coordinator of the VV Campaign Command, and former minister Fernando Martínez Mottola, advisor to the opposition Democratic Unitary Platform.
