The beginning of trial of Ryan Routh, the man accused of trying to assassinate US president-elect Donald Trump on a golf course in Florida when he was a candidatehas been set for next February 10.

According to a judicial document to which EFE had access this Monday, Judge Aileen Cannon set for that date the start of the jury trial for Routh, a process that will be held in a federal court in Fort Pierce, in eastern Floridaand which will initially last two weeks.

The judge granted this new date (the start was scheduled for November 11) with a view to “allowing for appropriate consideration and adjudication of any anticipated pretrial motions,” according to a court brief.

The lawyers of the Prosecutor’s Office, for their part, and in compliance with an order from the magistrate, delivered on Sunday a list of the experts they intend to call as witnesses during the judicial hearings.

On September 30, Routh pleaded not guilty to the five charges he faces.including attempted murder of a major presidential candidate, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and assault on a federal official.

The 58-year-old man was arrested on September 15 at a Florida golf course owned by former President Trump (2017-2021), where A Secret Service agent discovered him armed with a semi-automatic rifle hidden behind a row of bushes. and at times when the Republican was there.

After being spotted, he fled the scene but was arrested the same day of the events, and has also been charged with the crimes of possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with a deleted serial number in relation to the attempted murder.

Routh, who in a handwritten letter acknowledged his intention to commit the crime and regretted having failed, could face a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted.

Last October, Cannon refused to withdraw from the case, as the defense had requested in a motion.

The judge dismissed the request for recusal from Routh’s defense, which alleged that she has some “relationship” with the former president, who appointed her to the position in 2020.
