Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight and this morning (11/17/2024) with the launch of more than two hundred projectiles, including missiles and drones, reported the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. “A massive combined attack in all regions of Ukraine. During the night and morning, Russian terrorists used drones of various types, particularly ‘shaheds’. Cruise, ballistic and air missiles: ‘Zircon’, ‘Iskander’, ‘Kinzhal’. In total, about 120 missiles and 90 drones. Our air defense forces destroyed more than 140 air targets,” Zelensky said in a message on Telegram. He admitted that there are power outages in some areas, but said that work is being done to eliminate the consequences of the attack.
The Ukrainian energy operator, DTEK, reported on Sunday “emergency power cuts in kyiv, in the Donetsk region, in the Dnipropetrovsk region.”. Shortly before, Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced that Russia was carrying out a massive attack on the Ukrainian electricity system. Russian forces are “attacking electricity generation and transmission facilities throughout Ukraine,” the minister declared. The head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Andrii Sibiga, described the bombings as “one of the largest attacks” carried out by Moscow, despite the fact that they have been repeated intermittently, the last one just two days ago against Odessa.
In Mikolayiv, a drone attack left two people dead and six others injured, including two children, Zelensky reportedand expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims. The Ukrainian president thanked all the air defense forces that participated in repelling this attack: anti-aircraft missile troops, aviation – F-16, Sukhoi and MiG pilots -, mobile fire groups and electronic warfare units. “Everyone worked in an organized manner. Thank you for your reliable protection!” he wrote.
Ukraine has also hit Russia: One person was injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on a local factory in the city of Izhevsk, at the foot of the Urals, local leader Aleksandr Brechalov reported today. He added that at the plant “glasses were damaged,” but “there was no serious damage.” Izhevsk, where several weapons factories are located, is about 1,600 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border.
