Zelensky: “The war in Ukraine will end sooner with Trump in the presidency”

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky says he is sure the war with Russia will “end sooner” once Donald Trump is sworn in as US president.

Zelensky noted that he had a “constructive exchange” with Trump during the telephone conversation that took place after the Republican’s victory in the US presidential elections on November 5.

He did not say whether Trump had made any demands regarding possible talks with Russia, but said he had not heard anything from him that was contrary to Ukraine’s position.

Trump has consistently said his priority is to end the war and stop what he says is a waste of American resources, in the form of military aid to Ukraine.

Earlier this year, the US House of Representatives approved a $61 billion package of military aid to Ukraine so Kyiv can combat the Russian invasion.

The United States has been the largest arms supplier to Ukraine: between February 2022 and the end of June 2024, it delivered or pledged $55.5 billion worth of weapons and equipment, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a research organization. German.

“It is certain that The war will end sooner with the policies of the team that will now lead the White House. “This is their approach, their promise to their citizens,” Zelensky said in an interview with the Ukrainian media outlet Suspilne.

He added that Ukraine “must do everything possible to ensure that this war ends next year, and that it ends through diplomatic means.”

The situation on the battlefield is difficult, with Russian forces advancing, Zelensky noted.

Trump and Zelensky have long had a tumultuous relationship.

Trump was impeached in 2019 over accusations that he pressured Zelensky to dig up damaging information about US President Joe Biden’s family.

Despite years of differences, Trump has insisted that he has a very good relationship with Zelensky.

When the two met in New York in September, Trump said he “learned a lot” from the meeting and said he would get the war “resolved very quickly.”

During the US election campaign, the former president-turned-president-elect repeatedly promised to end the war “in one day,” but has yet to disclose how he plans to do so.

His Democratic opponents have accused him of ingratiating himself to Russian President Vladimir Putin and say his approach to the war amounts to a Ukrainian surrender that will endanger all of Europe.

Earlier this week, Russia denied reports that a call occurred between Putin and Trump days after the latter’s election victory, in which the president-elect was said to have warned against further escalating the conflict.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who spoke with Trump after the US election, told German media that the incoming US leader has a “more nuanced” position on the war than is commonly assumed.

The German leader was criticized by Zelensky for a phone call with Putin – his first in almost two years – on Friday.

Although Scholz’s office said he reiterated his call to end the war, Zelensky said this weakens the Russian leader’s isolation strategy.
