Alejandro Ariel Peñadirector of the Cancun Auxiliary Police, was removed from his position after a video in which he threatened to kill the reporter went viral. Raymundo Gomezbetter known as “Night Inspector”.

The video quickly circulated on social networks, showing the moment in which the official, known as Comandante Peña, confronts the reporter, visibly upset by the questions the journalist asked him.

The video shows an aggressive police director, in a drunken statethreatening the communicator with “serious consequences if he does not stop with his questions.”

The threats were not only made against him, but also against the staff of the bar where he was, whom he assured that he could “close their business,” according to SDP Noticias.

The situation escalated so much that it became an explicit verbal attack: “I’m going to kill you. “I’m going to kill you, dog.”.

This threat provoked an immediate reaction from both journalists and local authorities. Ana Paty Peralta, municipal president of the municipality of Benito Juárez, where Cancún is located, reported that the official was immediately dismissed.

For its part, Carlos Joaquín Gonzálezgovernor of Quintana Roo, condemned Peña’s behavior, since the state government is committed to the protection of journalists and respect for their fundamental rights.

The State Attorney General’s Office will begin an investigation to clarify the details of the threat and its possible legal implications.

The Secretariat of Public Security of Quintana Roo, through a statement, emphasized the non-tolerance of attitudes of abuse of power or attacks against freedom of expression.

Peralta stated in a statement: “The recorded conduct does not correspond to the guidelines of our institution,” and reported that The former director was placed at the disposal of the authorities.

Former commander Peña was arrested and transferred to the Public Ministry and so far he has not issued any statement about what happened.

Raymundo Gómez stated that Peña was not dismissed but removed from office, and claims that the staff of a bar, of which he is the owner, was intimidated the next day.

This incident once again underscores the growing concern for the safety of journalists in Mexico. Human rights organizations have expressed their support for the affected reporter and have demanded that measures be taken to guarantee the safety and freedom of work of the communicators.
