Los Angeles Mayor swears in city's new police chief

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Jim McDonnell was sworn in this Thursday as the 59th chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The ceremony took place at the Elysian Park Academynorth of downtown Los Angeles, where McDonnell’s wife, Kathy, pinned the chief’s badge on him with elected officials and dignitaries as witnesses.

During the ceremony, McDonnell laid out his priorities for the first 90 days as the new head of the third largest police force in the United States.

“As Chief of Police, I am ready to work with you to confront our challenges and move forward together with courage, compassion and a clear vision as we embark on this new chapter“, he expressed.

McDonnell assured be committed to strengthening public trust in the Los Angeles Police Department through community policing that prioritizes the needs and concerns of residents.

“We will focus on build trust through transparencyaccountability and a commitment to all voices in all neighborhoods,” said the new LAPD chief.

In his first 90 days at the helm of the department, McDonnell’s work will focus on listening, evaluating and planningand is expected to have meetings with stakeholders during this period, which he believes will shape the corporation’s priorities and refine its approach to public safety.
