The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumwelcomed the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) to reject the project that sought to partially invalidate the controversy judicial reform, about the choice of judges, ministers and magistrates through popular vote.
“I’m happy. Yesterday (Tuesday) The people of Mexico triumphed and reason won and sanity in the face of irrationality,” said the Mexican president in her morning conference.
He indicated that the judicial reform was decided by the people of Mexico and that there was no legal impediment to withdraw it.
Setback to ministerial project
On Tuesday, the SCJN rejected the project presented by the minister Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá, who proposed invalidating the election of federal judges and magistrates by popular vote, one of the most debated points of the reform. The proposal was rejected for not reaching the necessary majority of eight votes among the 11 ministers.
Sheinbaum highlighted that the choice of jjudges, magistrates and ministers “goes on June 1, 2025” and emphasized that this reform represents a profound transformation for the benefit of all Mexicans.
Judicial reform without changes
With the decision of the SCJN, The judicial reform remains intact, which means that the processes of popular election of judges and magistrates are maintained, along with the other elements of the legislation approved and made official in September.
For the administration of Sheinbaum and its allies, the Court’s decision It is a significant achievementsince they see the popular election of judges as a step towards a more representative judicial system that is closer to citizens.
