A convicted murderer and self-proclaimed “serial killer” who once testified in court that he was “Michael Myers” will spend the rest of his days behind bars for killing his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child.
Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Carolyn L. Addison ordered Joshua Dotson that fulfills a sentence of 102 years in a Tennessee correctional facility for the 2020 murders of Jamesha Covson19, and her unborn child, records consulted by Law&Crime show.
In August, a jury found Dotson, 25, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting after a three-day trial. Jurors deliberated for just 45 minutes after Dotson took the stand in his own defense and told the court he was a “serial killer,” Memphis Fox affiliate WHBQ reported.
“I’m Michael Myers.”Dotson exclaimed during testimony in which he also confessed to three more murders, although the District Attorney’s Office has not confirmed these claims to be true.
Addison sentenced Dotson to 51 years for each murder convictionordering that the sentences be served consecutively, that is, one after the other.
During the hearing, Addison called the case one of the saddest situations she has seen in her career. “You will never show remorse for the loss you have brought,” Addison told Dotson, according to WHBQ.
He posted a tribute to the victim on Facebook
According to a Memphis Police Department affidavit, in the early morning hours of June 12, 2020, Dotson and Covson were at their home at 1200 Quinn Avenue in Memphis when They began arguing about “a Facebook post and the victim’s pregnancy.”.
At one point, Covson entered a room and closed the door on Dotson, who responded by firing a bullet through the door.
Although the initial bullet missed Covson, the assailant forced his way into the room to continue arguing before leaving. Police said he returned a short time later and shot several times at Covson’s closed door, killing her and the child.
The victim was found in the home with several gunshot wounds. She was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries. The hospital doctors reported that I was between 5 and 6 months pregnant and that the baby had also died from his injuries.
According to a news release from the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, just two hours after fatally shooting Covson, Dotson posted a tribute to the victim on his Facebook page, telling him to fly highin what authorities believe was a calculated attempt to distance themselves from the crime.
“I had no remorse while I was there on the stand. He said he was a serial killer. He likes to kill women. He had no remorse at all,” said Regina Lucreziano, the Shelby County deputy district attorney who was prosecuting the case.
