One of the biggest rappers also joined the tributes in honor of Fernando Valenzuela, the legend of the Dodgers and Mexican sports, who died on October 22.

Ice Cube performed several minutes before game 2 of the World Series between his Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees. And in the middle of the show in front of a packed stadium, the legendary artist referred to “Toro” Valenzuela.

Ice Cube came out from behind the center field fence and began to tour the field with the lyrics of “Westside Connection”, a song that even got some Yankees players into rhythm.

“How do you feel up there today?… Are we going to win game 2 or what?” asked Ice Cube as the music of his classic “It Was a Good Day” began to play.

“We are doing this for Fernando, baby… Yes,” the artist continued, causing an exclamation from the stadium. “Same as game 1, homie“.

Moments later, when he reached the mound, Ice Cube lowered his head and respectfully pointed with his arm toward the number 34 that was painted on the pitching mound in Valenzuela’s honor.

At those moments, he would say to the rhythm of the song: “What park are you all playing baseball in?” (The original lyrics of the song say basketball).

Ice Cube completed the song standing in the batter’s box, giving the rallying cry coined by songwriter Vin Scully: “It’s time for Dodger Baseball.” (it’s Dodger baseball time), and after pretending to hit a hit, he dropped the microphone while being applauded.

Thunderous ovation for Valenzuela in the sixth inning

The Dodgers played another great game and beat the Yankees 4-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series, which moves to New York. Game 3 is scheduled for Monday.

In the middle of the sixth inning on Saturday, a video about Fernandomania was shown on the stadium’s giant screens. At the end, The music of “El Rey” played and Valenzuela’s number 34 appeared on the screens, which hangs in the Dodgers’ ring of honor along with some flowers..

That sparked a huge reaction from the crowd at Dodger Stadium, with fans rising to their feet to applaud Valenzuela. That ovation was the perfect complement to the ceremony a day earlier in honor of the most beloved Latino player in Dodger history.
