A comedian who performed as an ‘opening act’ at Donald Trump’s rally in New York called Puerto Rico an “island of floating garbage,” among other pejorative phrases and racist overtones.

“I don’t know if you know this, but there’s a floating island of garbage right there in the middle of the ocean, I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” said comedian Tony Hinchcliffe. in the middle of a speech full of phrases that seemed to be politically incorrect.

The reactions have not been long in coming, including those of the comedian himself who claimed that it was a joke taken out of context. “I love Puerto Rico and vacationing there,” he wrote in X.

For their part, Latino groups demanded an apology from former President Donald Trump’s campaign, after one of the participants in the Republican candidate’s rally at Madison Square Garden in New York said that Puerto Rico was “a floating island of garbage.”

Among the voices that called out the comedian’s humor, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin were among those who showed their support for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris Sunday night after a comedian made a racist joke about Puerto Rico at Donald Trump’s rally on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Roman Palomares, national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), immediately denounced the comments and said in a statement that the Trump campaign should have immediately rejected and condemned the comedian’s words.

“As usual, (Trump) has remained silent and, in the process, has insulted millions of proud Puerto Rican people living on the island and throughout the United States.”stressed the activist.

Organizations such as Voto Latino, UnidosUS, Mi Familia Vota, America’s Voice and the Hispanic Federation also rejected the comedian’s comments.
