Fernando Morientes, legend of real Madrid and the Spanish National Team during the decades of the 90s and 2000s, recently assured that during his time as a player they normalized racist attacks against his own teammates for which he offered his apologies.

The former forward, who now serves as a LaLiga ambassador, referred to a specific case with former defender Roberto Carlos, with whom he had many years of success in the merengue team. During that time, the Brazilian, like many others, received constant racist attacks.

“I feel the need to apologize because, although there were no episodes of racism in the locker room, we normalized the things that happened in the stands”Morientes commented during an event at the Spanish tournament focused on combating hate speech in football.

Some of Fernando Morientes’ words about the attacks of racism that he witnessed and normalized during his time as a player.

“I played with Roberto Carlos, (Claude) Makelele, (Clarence) Seedorf who were insulted and we laughed and did nothing. They insulted me for being the son of a civil guard. “They threw a banana at Roberto Carlos and we laughed.”recalled the now 48-year-old former attacker.

Fernando Morientes’ experience contrasts with what is happening today where, despite the fact that racist attacks continue to occur, there is more awareness on the part of the players themselves and the authorities who seek to somehow combat these unfortunate episodes within football.

“It seems to me that there is a lot of evolution because I see what it was before and what it is now. When there was an impertinent person, he was cheered (encouraged) by the other people who were around him. Now people look at him badly. “10 years ago it didn’t happen because that (racism) was normalized”considered.

Currently, another Real Madrid player, the Brazilian Vinícius Júnior, has raised his voice to combat this type of attacks that he receives despite the protocols and sanctions that have been applied to put an end to this type of behavior within the stadiums.

“There has been tremendous evolution, although residual things happen. “We have to continue moving forward to hopefully eradicate it 100 percent.”added the former Spanish footballer who formed a dream duo with Raúl González in Real Madrid’s attack before the ‘Galácticos’ stage.

Unfortunately, it is not only in football where these types of racist attacks have occurred in Spain where the Olympic athlete, Ana Peleteiro, has also been a victim of them. Like Vinícius Júnior, he has had an important role in combating it and making it visible to seek to eradicate it.
