Last chance to register and vote in California

This Monday, October 21, the deadline ends so California residents can vote in the November 5 presidential election.

In September, two months before the election date, it was estimated that 4 million Californians they had not yet applied for registration to participate in the voting.

Of the 22 million registered voters in the state, a percentage have already completed and returned their ballots by mailwithout the need to wait until the last day to vote.

If you are not registered yet, You still have this Monday to do the processif you meet the requested requirements:

  • Be a citizen of the United States and have your residence in California.
  • Be 18 years old or older on election day.
  • Not be serving a sentence in a state or federal prison for a serious crime.
  • Not having been declared by a court mentally incompetent to vote.

California residents who are 16 or 17 years oldcan apply to pre-register to vote in California if they meet the other requirements above, and will automatically be registered to vote when they turn 18 years old.

To request your registration, California residents can complete the process through the online application at this link. The app is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Residents can also request registration with a paper document at election offices, libraries, at Department of Motor Vehicles offices or United States Postal Service no later than this Monday, October 21.

Registration from abroad

For people studying abroadcan register to vote using the Federal Postcard Application or the California Online Voter Registration system.

If you do not submit your registration application, California residents You can still vote on election dayon November 5, but with a conditional registration.

Eligible citizens can do this process at a designated county elections officea polling place or voting centers found at this link.

Members of the armed forces, overseas voters and voters with disabilities should contact their county elections office for information about conditional voter registration and available voting options.

Safe voting from home

The voters who fear for their safety and are eligible can register for the California Safe at Home voter program if they have experienced the following situations:

  • They are victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, human trafficking, child abduction, and elder or dependent adult abuse.
  • They are reproductive health care providers, employees, patients, or volunteers who have experienced threats of violence or harassment due to their affiliation with a reproductive health care service facility.
  • They are employees or contractors of a public entity who have experienced threats of violence or harassment due to their work for a public entity.
  • They are household members of a category mentioned above.
  • They fear for their safety or the safety of a minor or incapacitated adult.

Interested participants should visit their local enrollment agency after making an appointment. Applications that are completed are sent to Seguro en Casa for review and approval.

The deadline to register to vote with Safe at Home also ends this Monday, October 21.

Voters who miss the deadline can register until Election Day. but they will not be confidential voters.

Residents who are currently registered to vote in California and who want to cancel their voter registration They can submit the California Voter Registration Cancellation Request Form and send it to their county elections office.
