Hurricane Oscar formed in the Bahamas

He Hurricane Oscarthat the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has characterized as “small”, formed on Saturday off the coast of the Bahamas, causing Hurricane warnings for the southeastern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands.

According to the center’s update at 5 pm ET, Oscar was about five miles south of Grand Turk Island and about 435 miles east of Camagüey, Cuba.

The Category 1 storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour with stronger gusts, according to the hurricane center. The storm is expected to gain some strength Saturday night before beginning to gradually weaken Sunday night into Monday.

There are also hurricane warnings in Cubaand the government issued alerts for the provinces of Guantánamo, Holguín and Las Tunas.

The Turks and Caicos Islands must prepare for hurricane conditions Saturday nightaccording to the hurricane center advisory.

Tropical Storm Nadine

Tropical Storm Nadine It formed hours before in the western Caribbean and is moving west toward the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The hurricane made landfall near Belize City around 12 pm US Eastern Time.

Heavy rain and tropical storm conditions occurred in parts of Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula.

There is a tropical storm warningl valid for Belize City and from Belize to Cancún, Mexico, including Cozumel.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1 and ends on November 30; Most of the activity occurs between mid-August and mid-October. Hurricane activity tends to peak in mid-September, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
