The control that inmates maintain in the Puente Grande Preventive Prison ranges from the payment of some services and “luxuries” to the opening of some doors.
Personnel who worked at the center told the Mural newspaper about the scope of self-government in that prison, which is supposedly in charge of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) from the Government of Aristóteles Sandoval.
Proof of this was the party organized in honor of José Luis Gutiérrez Valenciaalias “Don Chelo” or “El Ojo de Vidrio”, father-in-law of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantesalias “El Mencho”, leader of the CJNG.
The gathering in which there were intoxicating drinks and other activities outside of protocol was reported in May 2017, but was allegedly held years ago, since “Don Chelo” had been arrested and admitted to the prison in 2010.
After his departure, other members of the CJNG have assumed control of the prisonAmong them was Rodrigo “A”, known as “El Moto” or “El Monti”, who left the prison on October 8, revealed the sources consulted.
His departure produced a fight between sides that dispute the succession of self-government.
Among the resources that self-government moves are television rentals among inmates, extortion calls, stores inside the prison, and charging for the use of basic daily items.
“El Tom” maintains control inside the prison
The self-government of the Preventive Prison has a structure in which they establish in each dormitory a person called “Chaka”.
The “Chaka” of each dormitory is responsible for enforcing the guidelines established by the leader, including the schedules for carrying out various actions, such as collecting water, which is rationed in the prison, or the opening and closing of some of the areas.
Among those disputing the leadership is a man nicknamed “El Tom”, his initial capture was announced in 2017 and, although he returned to the streets in unclear circumstances, he was recaptured in 2021.
The first arrest of “El Tom”, or “El Tommy”, was announced on November 9, 2017; The then Prosecutor Eduardo Almaguer had reported that he was the head of a cell of hitmen with dominance in the borders between Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque.
After a year of preventive detention, “El Tom” returned to the streets without clarifying the reason why he filed charges.
On July 31, 2021, he was recaptured. The then Prosecutor Gerardo Octavio Solís Gómez stated that they had completed an arrest warrant for a double murder recorded on December 17, 2019 in Tlaquepaque.
Solís assured that the suspect was a member of the CJNG and had its area of influence in several neighborhoods in Guadalajara and other nearby areas of Tlaquepaque.
