The United States Attorney’s Office alerted Judge Brian Cogan that Frank Perez, the lawyer of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, would be leading the defense of his son, Vicente Zambada Niebla, “El Vicentillo”.

The prosecution details that, “the government respectfully sends this letter to notify the court of a potential conflict of interest, which is why they requested that a hearing be held in this regard to notify and decide whether or not to remain with the same lawyer.

“Specifically, Mr. Pérez’s duties of loyalty and confidentiality toward his client could prevent him from advising the defendant on viable defense strategies. and represent it vigorously and diligently both in the pre-trial stage and in the process,” the text reads.

‼️The prosecutors ask Judge Brian Cogan that El Mayo Zambada’s lawyer, Frank Perez, continue to be his representative in the event of a possible conflict of interest, since he was the lawyer of his son Vicente Zambada Niebla, who cooperated with the process against El Chapo Guzmán.

“During the trial of “El Chapo”, the son of the accused, Zambada Niebla, represented by Pérez, appeared as a government witness about, among other things, how his father and “El Chapo” ran the Sinaloa Cartel together. He also described his role in the Cartel working for his father and El Chapo.

In May 2019, Zambada Niebla was sentenced in the Northern District of Illinois to 15 years in prison and a term of supervised release, which he recently completed. Although Zambada Niebla completed his time of incarceration and supervised release, as a government cooperator, he has a permanent obligation to the United States to testify if requested.

Jesús Vicente Zambada Niebla is the first-born of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. He was arrested in Mexico City on March 19, 2009 and extradited to the United States in February 2010.

Vicente Zambada Niebla, alias “El Vicentillo”, participated in the trial of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in 2019, where he exposed the importance of “El Mayo” within the Sinaloa Cartel. And, in fact, according to different versions, he tried to convince his father to surrender to justice.
