A new generation engine: the heart of the W1

The V8 engine of the W1, baptized ‘MPH-8’is an engineering masterpiece that has been developed completely from scratch by McLaren.

With a power of 916 HP alonethis engine is capable of generating the highest specific power in McLaren history, reaching 233 HP per liter.

This is achieved through a series of technological innovations, such as the use of a lightweight block, rigid valve train and plasma-coated cylinders, which allow a rev limit of 9,200 rpm.

Accompanying the combustion engine, The W1 has a hybrid system called ‘E-Module’. This system includes a radial flux electric motor, a control unit and a compact 1.4 kWh battery pack.

Although it only adds an additional 342 HP, this hybrid component significantly improves the car’s response and allows a small electric range of 1.6 kilometers, ideal for short trips in urban environments.

Although the autonomy may seem minimal, the objective of this system is not electric driving over long distances, but rather to enhance the overall performance of the car.

Lightness and performance, McLaren’s obsession

One of the most notable aspects of the McLaren W1 is its lightness. Despite the inclusion of a hybrid system, the car weighs just 1,399kg dry, just 3.5kg lighter than the P1.

This achievement is largely due to the optimization of all hybrid components, which have reduced the total weight by 40 kilos compared to the previous model.

The hybrid ‘E-Module’ system, for example, it only weighs 20 kilosa detail that makes a big difference in the overall performance of the car.
