The music world and fans of the iconic Whitney Houston mourn the loss of her mother, Cissy Houston, who passed away last Monday, October 7, at her home in New Jersey.
The family confirmed the death in a statement to the Associated Press agency.
Cissy Houston, 91, passed away while receiving hospice care due to her battle with Alzheimer’s. The loss of this prominent gospel figure comes 12 years after the tragic death of her daughter, who left us on February 11, 2012 at the age of 48, and nine years after the death of her granddaughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who He died on July 25, 2015 at age 22.
Cissy, an award-winning, Grammy-winning artist recognized for her career in gospel, was 91 years old and in hospice care due to Alzheimer’s disease.
In the statement, Pat Houston, wife of Michael Houston, Cissy’s son and Whitney’s brother, said: “Our hearts are full of pain and sadness. “We have lost the matriarch of our family.”highlighting the mark it leaves on culture and music.
“Mother Cissy has been a strong and dominant figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared deeply about family, ministry and community. “His more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the center of our hearts.”.
Cissy Houston was a great music star
Cissy Houston’s legacy is immortalized in the music industry, where she will be remembered for her talent and influence on gospel and soul. Houston, born Emily Drinkard, was born on September 30, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey, and was the youngest of eight children.
As a child, she developed her love for music by singing in local churches and later was part of iconic backup groups, such as The Sweet Inspirations, where she worked alongside stars such as Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley.
Cissy and Whitney’s relationship
Whitney and Cissy were always very close, although their relationship was not without ups and downs.
Cissy influenced Whitney from a young age, introducing her to the world of music and singing. Whitney grew up admiring her mother’s talent and developed her own career under her guidance. Cissy supported her daughter in her career from her first steps on stage, and also tried to help her during her most difficult times, especially when Whitney faced addiction problems.
Although their relationship had its ups and downs, due in part to the pressures of the industry and Whitney’s personal struggles, the bond between mother and daughter remained strong. Cissy always expressed her unconditional love and support for Whitney, even in the most difficult times, keeping her memory and legacy alive.
Her sons, Gary and Michael, along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, survive the talented artist.
