Alejandro Arcos Catalán was barely celebrating his sixth day after taking office as mayor of Chilpancingo, in the state of Guerrero, southern Mexico, when his decapitated body was found by authorities.

The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed the murder after finding his body abandoned in a vehicle east of the city. According to photographs published on social networks, his head was found on the awning of a truck in the Villas del Roble neighborhood, in the east of the capital of Guerrero.

After the tragic news was announced, Alejandro Moreno, national president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), regretted the crime of one of his members.

“They have murdered our mayor of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, and just three days ago the secretary of this same City Council, Francisco Tapia. They had been in office for less than a week. Young and honest officials who sought progress for their community. Our condolences and solidarity to their families. Given the ungovernable situation in Guerrero, we will be asking the FGR to investigate both murders,” he said.

For its part, The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Guerrero announced that it began an investigation file against whoever or whoever is responsiblefor the crime of qualified homicide, committed to the detriment of Alejandro Arcos, for the events that occurred in Chilpancingo.
