'The Flavors of My Mexico' is inspired by Frida Kahlo

Ricardo Soltero paints marigold flowers on the dress of a sculpture of Frida Kahlo at the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles, while a large poster with an image of the popular artist remains behind him as if he were looking at it.

Soltero is creating the painting to celebrate the second edition of the cultural experience “Los Sabores de Mi México” that will take place in Hollywood at the Ovation Plaza, all weekend through October 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. :00 pm, where visitors will experience a gastronomic and artistic journey inspired by the great Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

“Frida is one of those iconic cultural symbols of Mexico that go around the world and fortunately for us are taken as their own in different corners of the planet, so I thought it was great that this celebration in the context of Hispanic Heritage Month will revolve around Frida,” said the Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles, Carlos González Gutiérrez during a press conference.

According to the host of the event, Rafael Rubalcava, the Sabores de Mi México will be an artistic and gastronomic event for the whole family and will be completely free.

The event will feature a replica of the facade of the Kahlo family home that will allow people who do not have the opportunity to travel to Mexico and visit the Red House to learn more about the artist’s life and family.

. “And when we bring them here in person and they are going to enter through the facade of the Red House with all the details: the gate, the windows, the colors, the brick that looks exactly like the house in real life,” he explained Rubalcava train to the exhibition they will find a replica of the family kitchen.”

In addition, visitors will be able to see unpublished photographs that capture the intimate essence of the Kahlo family that will give a glimpse into Frida Kahlo’s legacy.

Also as part of the event, an exclusive book will be presented that reveals family recipes and includes photos of recipes handwritten by Frida, which were accumulated throughout her life.

The book represents the first time the recipes have been shared with the public in years

“This book connects us with the woman, with the family, with that daily life, what was eaten in Frida’s house, her handwritten recipes… Frida, in Coyoacán, was always very connected with Mexican cuisine, which still It is alive,” said Sabores de Mi México chef Mónica Patiño.

Carlos González Gutierrez, the consul general of Mexico in LA, speaks during a press conference about the Los Sabores de Mi México event in Los Angeles.

Ten monumental Fridas created by talented contemporary Mexican artists will be featured including: Elisa Pasos, Jaime Saldívar, Mariana Lagunas, Karlo Arnauda and more.

“If there is an artist who represents us worldwide, it is her,” said artist Elisa Pasos.

In the monumental Frida that Pasos painted, he chose the color yellow to represent joy, he added different textures to create the sensation of movement and in the lower part of the dress he wanted a childlike feeling to represent the happy part of Kahlo.

During the event, families will also be able to express their creativity thanks to the Pinta tu Frida workshop where they can paint miniature replicas of the monumental sculptures on display.

“The public will have the opportunity to paint Frida to their liking in any color they want and the best of all is that they will be able to take it home as a great souvenir of the event,” said Rubalcava.

People who are interested in attending one of the Pinta tu Frida workshops can register for a session on the Los Sabores de Mi México website.

According to the Los Sabores de Mi México website, the next cities that will participate in the event are Chicago and Dallas.

“This is an event that dignifies, that shows the world what Mexico represents through culture, through gastronomy, through customs, personality and what we are known for,” said the representative of Jarritos in the USA, Salvador Vargas, who is one of the sponsors of the event.
