Amid the success of Netflix, the Menédez brothers will have a new audience. Erik and Lyle They were convicted more than 28 years ago for the murder of their parents, José and Kitty Menéndezin his Beverly Hills mansion.

This announcement comes two weeks after the launch of the second season of the Netflix series ‘Monsters’, which dramatizes its controversial story.

According to the information reviewed by Variety, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón made this news public at a recent press conference. Gascón revealed that new evidence has been found that suggests that the brothers would have been victims of sexual abuse by their father.

“We have evidence. “We have received a photocopy of a letter in which one of the brothers mentions being a victim of sexual abuse.”

Added to this, evidence was presented that a former member of the Menudo gang alleged that he suffered abuse at the hands of José Menéndezwhich adds a new dimension to the case.

From hearing to a new trial?

The upcoming hearing could open the door to a new trial or a review of Erik and Lyle’s sentencing. However, Gascón warned that no decision has yet been made in this regard. “None of this information has been confirmed.”he stated.

Despite this, the prosecutor stressed the need for an ethical and moral review of the evidence presented.

The judicial process was complex; initially, the brothers were tried separatelybut both trials were null. When they were finally tried together, they were sentenced without the possibility of parole.

Their defense focused on the argument that they acted motivated by fear of losing their lives after years of abuse.

Despite the fact that in 1998 and 1999 the California Court of Appeals and the California Supreme Court upheld their convictionsthe recent revelation of new evidence has led the brothers to request a new hearing. This request was made following the discovery of testimony supporting her claims of abuse.

The series ‘Monsters’, directed by Ryan Murphy, has revived interest in the Menéndez case. Although it has been a resounding success, accumulating 19.5 million views in its first weekaccording to Variety.

This fact has generated controversy due to its representation of the brothers. Erik Menéndez spoke out from prison, criticizing the series for being “naive and inaccurate” and stating that his intentions are not entirely innocent. Some members of the Menendez family have backed Erik and Lyle, calling the series “grotesque” and “riddled with falsehoods.”
