Francis Ford Coppola has been working for several decades to bring to fruition this ambitious production, the idea of which he conceived in 1977. Megalopolis is defined as “a Roman epic set in an imagined modern America,” according to the film’s synopsis. This sci-fi story takes place in the city of New Rome (which closely resembles New York City), which must rebuild after a devastating disaster, sparking a conflict between Caesar Catiline (played by Adam Driver), a visionary architect looking to leap forward into an idealistic, utopian future, and his opponent, corrupt mayor Franklyn Ciceron (Giancarlo Espósito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, crony interests, and partisan warfare. Among them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Caesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves. Could there really be parallels between the fall of the Roman Empire and the future of America?
