Operation against Jalisco Cartel causes blockades and burning of vehicles in Mexico

After Sinaloa, in northern Mexico, has been plunged into violence over the past 15 days following the capture of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, forcing military deployment, a similar situation is now taking place in Michoacán.

A federal operation against hitmen from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) ended in a series of shootouts, roadblocks and burned vehiclesin at least eight municipalities in the state of Michoacán, western Mexico.

The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that the operation resulted in the capture of three CJNG hitmen, who were detained in possession of assault rifles and five vehicles that were used by the criminal organization.

Meanwhile, the State Public Security Secretariat (SSP) briefly reported through its social networks that “As a result of an operational action carried out in the municipality of Erongarícuaro, alleged criminal groups carried out roadblocks in the municipalities of Quiroga, Churintzio, Chilchota and Tangancícuaroin response to which we deployed in these areas in order to preserve public order.”

According to local media, agents from the FGR, the Mexican Army and the National Guard identified a CJNG cell related to the theft of late-model or high-end vehicles.

The group of hitmen attacked the uniformed men with high-caliber rifles, unleashing a confrontation lasting more than half an hour in the downtown area of ​​Erongarícuaro, where the three hitmen were finally arrested, although at least a dozen accomplices fled.

This police-military operation caused cells of CJNG hitmen to forcibly seize eight cargo trucks, vans and vehicles, which they set on fire or used to block roads.

Groups of police officers from the Civil Guard (State Police) and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) joined the operation to gradually clear the roadswhere hundreds of motorists were stranded for more than three hours.

Through videos, residents of the region’s towns have shared images of burned vehicles and the deployment of armed agents and civilians.

The CJNG is one of 14 cartels or organized crime groups operating in Michoacán, where it has expanded its drug trafficking activities to kidnappings and extortion of businessmen, ranchers, transporters and farmers.
